Darius â Menara
The swift thundered between Dariusâs legs as the birch trees of Silverbark Forest whizzed by. Menaraâs grey walls hid behind the trunks, but he wasnât far now thanks to his impressive mount. Being overlord had its perks; now he could travel with ease, and only Thestor and his partner algus came with him to give some discreet protection.
It hadnât been easy to leave his army without anyone noticing, slipping away when it was quiet rather than letting word spread of where he was heading. Lex and Lyra would handle things for him while he was in Menara.
Perhaps he was foolish for even going to inquire about what Frida had told him of. Risking his life so that he couldnât have children wasnât something heâd ever thought heâd be doing, but he was a strong man not long from his prime. The risks had to be low.
And Lex had been right. Heâd been risking his life every day to slay the King and sacrificed thousands of warriors in the process. But heâd have chosen to be with Lex over vengeance any day. Why shouldnât he be willing to take even a small risk for her?
He tore through the gateway to the town before heâd realised it was close, quickly slowed his swift so that it walked at the pace of a normal horse, then went about finding the medicine manâs place. The heavy grey fur and hood covering his body would conceal his identity, and apart from the Twin Blades sheltered under the garment, he hadnât any armour that would betray who he was. Thestor and his partner were similarly cloaked, but as usual, Darius worried the man was a little too recognisable as privileged.
People scurried through the streets about their business with more cheer and smiles than the last time heâd been here. Having freedom seemed to have worked out well for a change, and once the Psilos Bridge was effectively Dariusâs, this town would be even safer from the war.
After asking a young couple for directions, he finally found the place he sought. Made from a mix of clay and stone with many finger marks remaining, the building itself leaned to its right with cracks like wrinkles stretching across it and might have toppled over had it not been only a single storey. Shutters blocked the windows and the door nailed in place, but a flicker of orange light through the cracks in the wood gave away whoever was in there.
âAre you sure this is the place?â Thestor asked. âThis house barely looks inhabitable for rats.â
Despite Dariusâs wariness about the sealed-off building, the sign outside gave him confidence it was.
âMust be,â he said.
âAnd do you want to tell us what weâre doing here now?â Thestor asked.
âNot particularly.â He dismounted to end the manâs questions, then went up to the door and rapped a few gentle knocks.
Soon after, a sound came from inside but so light it could have easily been from a draught.
Then the orange light died.
âI know someoneâs in there,â Darius called out.
